Halloween Ideas for a Cheap Candelabra Haunted House Prop
A cheap candelabra can be made for instance from ceiling fan parts. Most ceiling fans have decorative globe style light fixtures at their bottoms. As you flip over this metal piece, it becomes an excellent holder for electric candles. You will also need additional lamp parts, some plastic pipe, lamp sockets, a plug, flicker bulbs, some zip-cord, paint and a couple pf hours for a great candelabra.
You can use a three light armature model or four or five lamp models as well. The more decorated the armature is, the better. However, the expensive armatures didn’t look as good as the moderately priced models. In case the center – which is attached to the fan – doesn’t have a cup where to place the candle, just buy a single lamp holder piece and fix it to the center with the lamp type threaded hardware.
Hold the assembly upright and with a copper pipe, a threaded rod and some larger washers fix the handle to the bottom of the middle candle holder. Now you have the basic armature assembly. We used candles of 12″ piece of 1″ PVC plastic plumbing pipe with ceramic light socket fixed to one end. The other end was placed into the armature cup with a 1″ coupling glued to the cup.
With a bit of zip-cord attach to the socket with wire nuts and thread the cord through the cup, armature and also through the middle of the fixture. Next, push the PVC pipe into the coupling.
After the candles are assembled and are attached to the armature, wire together all the candles at the center cup base, then thread the zip-cord all the way through the center and out through the base. Hold the candelabra upright in a solid place.
Use a spray paint to color the candles in the color of your choice. Let the candles completely dry before continuing on. With a caulking gun and clear silicone make small lines from the top of the socket to the center of the PVC pipe to produce the melted wax effect on the candles. Just practice a little bit and the silicone will look just great. Use a toothpick, a scrap of wood to form the silicone better on the candle.
Now, attach the plug, screw in the flicker bulbs and plug it in.
