How to Make a Checkerboard Man Haunted House Illusion

Checkerboard Man Haunted House IllusionWell, this can be a ghostlike visually challenging effect as it plays on your senses with the use of optical illusion. The entire scene relies on two colors, black and white. You have to paint the walls, floor and ceiling in checkerboard fashion, with six inches black and white squares. The actor in the scene will wear a so called “all-in-one” body suit, which has to be painted exactly as the wall. Also, do not forget to cover the face, the hands and feet. To complete the illusion you need two strobe lights with a speed adjustment, which is a common feature of most strobes. The two strobes need to be positioned in the two corners of your missing fourth wall. To get the illusion right, rehears the actor on the painted up suit, move slowly and then modify the strobe’s “flash rate” in a manner to obtain the best possible effect.

The mix of black and white squares, strobes and the actor’s movement will make your guest lose their depth perception. They are going to be puzzled and asking themselves, “Did that wall move?”

As a matter of fact, you might find it easier to match your wall pattern to the suite you find. You might even use black walls with polka-dots on them and covering a black spandex suit for the actor. Note, that the use of fluorescent dots looks just great in black light.
