Building a Jacobs Ladder for Your Halloween Haunted House

Needed parts:

- High voltage transformer (9-15 kV),
- 10 to 4 gauge bare, solid wire; the thicker the wire, the better,
- Plexiglass to enclose the assembly (it is not compulsory, but it is recommended),
- Wood for the base,
- Power cord.

The Transformer

Neon signs and oil burner transformers are frequently used to build Jacob’s ladder. When purchasing a transformer, make sure you get one with a voltage rating of 9-15 kV. The actual output is not really important. Try to find a used transformer, as they are a lot cheaper than purchasing them new.

Oil burner transformers might be located where furnace repair and different mail catalogs are done. If you are lucky, furnace repair companies have older units that they are ready to give for almost nothing, while new they cost around $30-$40.

Neon sign transformers can be found virtually on any place where neon signs are made. New items cost from $75 to $150, so a used one would be your best option. They frequently have old transformers from fixed sign which are generally in working condition.

Instructions

Take the two segments of the wire and straighten them out. The way you connect and stabilize each segment of the “V” varies upon the type of transformer you have, but the idea is pretty much the same.

Connect every wire to a high voltage terminal and shape a “V” with a space around 1/4″ at the bottom and 3″ at the top. Remember, the wires mist not touch, or the Ladder will not work. The wires have to be stabilized with wood, glass or some plastic. Pay attention when utilizing wood, because the high voltage is likely to carbonize it after some time and when that occurs, it might burst into flame.

A case is recommended, as it prevents people from getting electrocuted and stops the spark from extinguishing too soon because of the air currents.

If you build a case for the Jacob’s Ladder, ensure that it’s an insulator and the spark is not touching any part of it and there are little vent holes at the bottom and top of the case.
