How to Make a Scary Halloween Scarecrow Prop for Your Yard
Scarecrows have become some popular scary Halloween decorations, but they are not created to scare birds, but to frighten trick-or-treaters. Most people will find a scarecrow quite creepy, even a threatening figure, especially throughout the Halloween season.
For the Halloween scarecrows you might use a homemade scarecrow or buy one at your local department store.
You will need two boards, one one 2”x2”x8’ and one 2”x2”x4’ to build the scarecrow mast. As possible, try to select straight, but not quite perfect looking lumber as they incline to look older and much more weather beaten. Next you need to stain both boards on all sides with some wood stain.
The 8 foot board will be the vertical up-right of the mast and the 4 foot board is going to be the horizontal. Use bolts instead of screws or nails to be disassembled more easily and to change the angle of the horizontal board.
Put the 4 foot board on top of the 8 foot board crossways in such way that the top of the horizontal board is roughly 8 inches from the top of the vertical board. Make a hole in the middle of both boards and push a bolt through from the top to the back and with a washer and bolt on tighten it.
With the mast on the ground, place the scarecrow on top of it with the neck over the higher cross-member board. Secure the scarecrow to the mast with twine, cable-ties or ropes at the ankles, wrists, shoulders and neck.
Dig a hole large enough for the base of the mast to fit into and place the base of the mast into the hole and cover it with dirt. Compress the dirt surrounding the board for a secure foundation.
Similarly to most Halloween decorations the illumination is crucial. You need to properly illuminate them to obtain the desired effect. For your Halloween scarecrow you might use a 25 watt or 7 watt amber colored light bulb in a metal housing.
