Fake Barb Wire that is Easy to Make
Whenever you might need some barb wire for a costume or something, here is a simple and easy technique to make fake barb wire. The use of the real stuff is not recommended for its potential for accidents.
1. The materials you need
String – about 2.5 time more string than you are looking for barbed wire; PVA glue and gray paint. Make a pot of glue, diluting it with 1:1 water as it is easier to work with. Mix the gray paint into the glue for a nice and even coloring. The right ratio is about 4:1 diluted glue to paint.
2. Making the wire
Take a string about two times as long as you want the wire to be. The string will have a twist from it’s construction; attach on end of the string to some object and keep twisting the string in the direction of it’s construction.
The trick is to cautiously fold the string in half and it should begin to twist around itself due to the extra twist you put in the string. With some nudge place these twists evenly all along the length of the string, which will constitute the base of the barbed wire.
Next, put in the string into the glue, ensuring it is covered all over and the string is fully covered with glue. Then, hand the string to dry up, making sure is not touching anything or you will have everything glued up.
3. Making the barbs
Every barb begins as a length of string roughly 10 cm long. Put in this string into the glue and completely cover it. Next, wrap it around the wire segment you prepared previously. It will naturally attempt to straighten itself out, so leave it on some surface till the glue has set a little bit.
As soon as the barb is fully dried, cut the ends in a way to have a pointed look. Repeat the process to have barbs upon the spacing of your choice along the wire.
